As I wrapped up Blog Inc. by Joy Cho I found my self wildly motivated to be a stay at home mom/full time blogger. Only 2 problems were found with this dream. 1. No kids, so it’s tough to be a stay at home mom and B. I’m hardly disciplined enough to write twice a week blog posts let alone blog for an income. So needless to say I had a reality check and channeled my new motivation into sharing with you the benefits to web logging (that’s where they got the name blog from, web log, interesting, eh?).
Some of my favorite takeaways from this fun and easy read were all the different types of blogs that are out there. There are community blogs – written by multiple people, individual blogs, informational, critical and so many more types! Blogs are such a crazy idea to me, that I’m putting out all this information and all these ideas to the whole world. Anyone could stumble onto a blog and start to get to know you. A few more of my Blog Inc. takeaways are at the bottom of the post.
A huge part of this book explains about earning a profit from blogging. I knew about this concept only because I’ve noted adds on blogs I love. I had no idea all the intricate planning, work and strategy comes into play when you start earning a profit on your blog. For starters, Blog Inc. says that a good time to start thinking about sponsors is when you reach 100,000 visits a month! Can you imagine sharing with so many people every single month! My blog reaches several thousand a month but I would be absolutely floored if I started talking to 100,000 a month. What an honor that would be (not to mention cool!).
This book actually started a very interesting conversation with a man on a plane. I finished it up on the way back from California. The man next to me wanted to know what the book was about. When I started explaining to him I realized how enthusiastic and excited I sounded. I also sounded pretty smart! He was very attentive and we ended up chatting the whole way from Austin to Phoenix until our plane changed. Granted the whole time we didn’t stay on blogs, we went on to his kids, weddings, jobs, savings accounts, medical school and the benefits of knowing a second language! Yea, it got a bit off topic!
All in all I’d say this book was pretty good. I’m very glad my cousin and fellow business owner recommended it! It was quick and one that you can skim if you’re low on time. The headings and subheadings explain pretty well the content so if you wanted to go through and pick the headings you’re most interested in that wouldn’t be a bad idea. What ever your business may be or your hobbies are people are interested and it would be one wild adventure to tell about it!
-Blogging is a great way to get your ideas out there and see what people think. However, anytime you share your opinion you’re taking a risk that someone won’t like it or disagree.
-I can blog to capture the attention of a community of people that share my interests. Therefore I need to blog about things that I’m interested in and provide my unique side or point of view to create a unique niche.
-Having a recurring column or writer on my blog can create variety and open doors to new ideas that may not be completely related to my main subject. (This is what has spurred my to introduce my new column…eeeee I’m so excited for it, COMING SOON!)
