With Abbey finishing nursing school in upstate New York, and Barret in his first year as anArmy doctor in El Paso…this love withstood the test of long-distance. And let me just warn you, this couple’s love for each other is sure to melt your heart.
Enjoy this adorable Q&A with bride, Abbey as well as some of myfavoritesnapshotsfrom their stunning weddingday at Moffitt Oaks!
Q:When and how did you and Barret first meet?
A: Barret and I met at a West Point football game my freshman year of college in 2009. We both belonged to a pre-medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon, and our chapters decided to have mixers. He was in charge of the social events of his chapter, and I held the same position in mine. He was in charge of grilling all the food at the football game.
I was a bit shy at the time, so my cheeks turned bright red and I tried to hide them in my scarf because I thought he was DREAMY. I think the only words we actually spoke to each other that day were about cheeseburgers, but we both apparently had a lot to say to our friends later on. I told my roommate that we HAD to plan more events with the West Point chapter because I needed more excuses to talk to him. He told his best friend that the shy girl in the hat was cute and he wanted to talk to her more.
Q. Tell me about your very first date!
A. We technically have two we count. We were in charge of planning a fraternity formal that was held at West Point for our chapters. Even though we had spent hours planning together, we were both too shy to really talk about dates to the event. He eventually asked me if I would save him the first dance. I told him that I’d save him the last one too….and a few in between. We danced the whole night together and it was the best time.
Our first real date alone was when he took the train up to Poughkeepsie for the day. We ate at my favorite Italian restaurant, went to the arcade, got ice cream cones, and watched the sun set over the Hudson river from the boat docks at my college.
Q. Tell me about the moment when you knew he/she was “the one”
A. Looking back, I think I knew almost instantly. He was the first person and the only person I was every truly myself with from the start. I felt like I had known him forever. Time spent with him was effortless and precious. When he left for medical school and we both started seeing other people, nothing was ever the same. I was never as comfortable or happy and there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t think about him. We stayed best friends, but there was always so much more. When I got off the plane to see him for the first time in 3 years apart, I knew it was always going to be him.
Q. How did he/she propose?
A. We met up in Houston for a visit over a long weekend from work and school in September. On Friday the 25 he told me it was date night. Since we both like to be comfy in scrubs and pajamas, we make a big deal out of nights we get to “suit up.” He took me to Perry’s for dinner and there were rose petals on the table and our favorite songs being played on a baby grand piano. After dinner we took a night stroll around the Woodlands and shared coffee by the water. After our walk he got me away from all the crowds and told me he wanted a quiet place to talk. He got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life by his side. I was so happy that I started to cry and couldn’t answer right away..but eventually I said yes! I had never been so happy.
Q. What is the most romantic thing your fiancé has ever done for you?
A. I’ll have to ask him if he even remembers this because he wasn’t even my boyfriend then…just best friend status. Barret has always been good at remembering the little things. I play guitar and he plays violin. When I was still in NY in school and he was in medical school in Texas he texted me one night and I was in the hospital with the flu and pneumonia (seriously I’m sick all the time in the winter). He told me to go on skype and was waiting with a guitar all ready because he had learned to play me some Taylor Swift songs with the guitar he was teaching himself. I’ll remember that even over any flowers or date nights because it was so thoughtful and sweet.
Huge Thanks to Chris Kraussfor coordinating this day!
